from Parcent to Castell de Castells

During this stage of the journey we can enjoy a beautiful mountainous landscape with views of the sea. Starting from Parcent in the Marina Alta, along an old iron works road we will climb to the Coll de Rates, a marine viewpoint that divides the Marina Alta and the Marina Baja. Through varied landscapes such as farmland, pine forests, the Cova Roja ravine or an ancient Moorish farmhouse that will allow us to discover further delights of this region, we will continue the path to Castell de Castells.

We start the route in Parcent, leaving the district along the Camí dels Pous, a former cattle track used by breeders in the area to avoid conflicts with farmers. We will pass through the Pozo de Cañada from where we will see the Coll de Rates, which is where we will be heading.

We will walk down the  track  until  we reach the Camí de les Révoltes, which was used in the 19th century to transport raisins from Tàrbena to Dénia for export.

We will go up this road, which still retains some paved sections up to the Coll de Rates. From there, we will get a good view of la Vall de Pop, El Montgó and the Mediterranean. An ideal place for recharging batteries.

From here we will go down a track of land between ancient terraces built in Moorish times, until arriving at the paved track next to the houses of the Tossalet Redó.

Next to the houses of the Tossalet is where the ascent begins which will lead us, among pine forests and terraces   of almond, olive and fruit trees, to the CV-715 road which we will cross to continue climbing the Penya Pinets. We will pass by the Font dels Olbis, a watering hole for cattle surrounding the hill, to reach the Sa Pou viewpoint. At this point we will have majestic views again, this time of the Castle    of Tàrbena, the Penya de Bèrnia and Serra Gelada.

We will continue down the CV-752 road until we are diverted onto a road that follows the course of the ravine of the Cova Roja, parallel to the road, until arriving at the plain of the Pla of d'Aialt and its farmyards of Moorish ancestry.

From here the road runs between fields of planted fruit and several pine forests, taking us towards Castell de Castells, allowing us to see the mountain range of Xortà all around us, the Castellet and the Mallada del Llop.

As the road narrows and we get closer to the course of the river, we will pass through quite a wild forest area to eventually arrive at the Font de la Bota and Castell de Castells.

Castell de Castells

A prehistoric site gives us hints of how ancient this place is, the cave paintings located in the sanctuary of the Pla de Petracos, declared a World Heritage Site.

The town originated in the old Castle of Serrella. It was a place once abundantly populated by Moors. It was later repopulated by Christian Mallorcans.

It is essential to visit the Macroschematic and Ethnological Museum of Art, where we can understand the meaning of the cave paintings and get to know the traditions of Castell de Castells; the Church of Santa Ana, a building of architectural interest, as well as the Hermitage of the Pla de Petracos.

Particularly notable are the old traditional dishes such as the olleta de blat, mintxos with farinetes i borra, homemade sausages and dishes imported by immigrants such as cous- cous.

Castell de Castells is located in between the mountains and abundant ravines of Serrella, Xortà and Alfaro and is surrounded by fields of dry land with almond, olive and carob trees.

Places of great beauty with attractive rock formations such as the Natural District Landscape of Els Arcs and the Penya de Castellet. Caves of remarkable interest such as the Cueva del Somo, Coves de Santa Maria or the cave of the Pla de Petracos.

Castell de Castells is surrounded by mountains and  ravines,  so  it  offers  a privileged space for practicing mountain hiking and mountain bike sports.

Descent of canyons and ravines such as the ravine of the Pas de Calvo; climbing the Xortà mountain range, els Almelerals and caving in the Cova del Somo.

In the district of Castell de Castells, there are three different hiking trails, some being its own and others shared with other districts. Some of the approved routes within the district are the PR-CV 149 Castellet, the PR-CV 150 Morro Blau and the PR-CV 151 Els Arcs.

It is recommended to do the PR-CV 168 Benimassot-Barranc de Malafí-Castells route in two days. On the first stage of the journey we will go from Benimassot to Castell de Castells through the Barranc de Malafí, and on the second stage we will go up from Castells to Benimassot, passing through Famorca and Fageca.
